Coaching in Education: Identity Crisis or Evolution?

In a recent conversation with a fellow educator, we explored how we each viewed coaching differently. The terms ‘mentor coaching’ and ‘pure coaching’ came up.

It seems the term coaching is currently experiencing some kind of identity crisis. Many people use it, love the concept, but over the years, various interpretations have emerged.

In an interview between Gideon Culman, MCC and Giuseppe Totino, MCC, CPF, LLM, MSc, we’re reminded of the important work the International Coaching Federation is doing to clarify coaching competencies.

As I prepare for my credentialing examination, I’m struck yet again by how well-thought-out these competencies are. This comes through in many interviews and is beautifully demonstrated in Brighton West’s helpful series. If you’re looking for a deeper understanding of the competencies, it’s well worth a watch—there’s something truly valuable in hearing it ‘straight from the horse’s mouth.’

But what about this identity crisis? I’m still exploring it myself, and I’d love to hear from educational leaders (or anyone who would like to discuss and maybe geek out a bit) on where they stand.
