Savouring the Art of Peer Observation in Adult Learning

I recently took up a peer lesson observation opportunity offered by my college – a no-brainer, really. As someone passionate about learning, I could have chosen from a huge pool of sessions. But, with a personal love for artisan bread, I found myself sitting in on an Artisan Bread Baking class, the type of session I’d love to be a learner in myself!

The atmosphere was incredible. Students brought their materials and understood the rhythm of the session, creating a flow where everyone could be themselves. Some were “sciency” types, fascinated by the chemistry of hydration and texture; others had a pure love for the tools and gadgets involved, proudly sharing everything from dough scrapers to kitchen scales with built-in timers (perfect for a future espresso-making class, which I’d love to see – an art in itself!).

The best part was the way students inhabited the space with confidence and respect for their brilliant teacher, who answered every question on hydration and texture with ease. I even got to jump in to demonstrate pretzel shaping—an added bonus!

From teacher demonstrations to troubleshooting and tasting, the lesson flew by in two engaging hours. The caretaker came by to see us out, happily sampling the final products left by the students who had already headed home with their shaped bagels, ready to bake in the morning.

The experience reminded me of the unique joy of adult learning environments, where passionate teachers and curious learners create a special community. I strive to cultivate this same atmosphere in my own coaching skills and German classes, where learners feel free to explore, connect, and grow. I look forward to welcoming peers to observe and share in these moments of learning and discovery. Observing peers in action is a fulfilling reminder of why I love this work.
